Driving Map - Bay of Islands, New Zealand Driving Directions from Auckland to the Bay of Islands Bay of Islands is 3 1/2 hour drive North of Auckland via the east coast highway. Take Highway 1 North 3 hours to Whangarei, continue on Highway 1 to Kawakawa. Highway 1 makes a left turn, keep straight into Highway 11 to Opua, Russell, Paihia and Waitangi. Continue on Highway 1 then Highway 10 to get to Kerikeri. If you have little more time, suggest taking the west coast highway 12, drive through Waipoua Forest and see the largest Kauri Tree (Tane Mahuta) in New Zealand. (about 5 hour drive) Good roads, pleasant scenery, take your time, enjoy the trip!
